FAQs
Is the Salvation Army a church?
The Salvation Army is part of the universal Christian Church. It is an evangelical movement and its churches are open to all. Yorkminster Citadel is one of over 300 Salvation Army congregations in Canada.
Those who make Yorkminster Citadel their church home, like members of The Salvation Army around the world, are committed to following Jesus Christ, with a particular calling to assist those who are in need.
What about uniforms?
The Salvation Army adopted a military metaphor in Victorian times. The uniform and military terminology still speak of our passion to fight for people who are in need and to combat evil and the ills of society, just as it did in the 1870s. Today, however, many Salvationists prefer not to wear uniform, and you will find both uniformed and non-uniformed Salvationists at Yorkminster. You will also find many who have chosen to worship at Yorkminster without becoming a Salvation Army ‘soldier’.
What is Salvation Army worship like?
Salvation Army churches have different styles of worship — some are more progressive than others. We believe our worship is a refreshing blend of contemporary and traditional, and includes brass and choral music.
